Spring has Sprung … and Sunshine Portals are Multiplying

(UPDATE: The BernCo Sunshine Portal did pass Tuesday night, with two amendments. One will remove the names of classified employees from the online database. This passed despite strenuous objection from the resolution’s sponsor, Wayne Johnson. The other amendment strikes the final 23 words of the original resolution. FOG objected to that language as overly broad and unsupported by law.)

Bernalillo County Commissioner Wayne Johnson plans to introduce a landmark piece of transparency legislation at tonight’s Commission meeting. The resolution would create an online Sunshine Portal with searchable access to County payroll, contracts, real-estate holdings, payments, budgets and more. This follows closely in the footsteps of the City of Albuquerque’s ABQ View and the state’s Sunshine Portal (in beta until July). (in beta until July).

The design and content-management system for the new FOG website (launch date 7/20/11) is supported by funding from the National Freedom of Information Coalition, through a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
Established in 1950, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation makes national grants in journalism, education and arts and culture. Its fourth program, community initiatives, is concentrated in 26 communities where the Knight brothers published newspapers, but the foundation is wholly separate from and independent of those newspapers.
