Legislation to Watch

Sarah Welsh

Sen. Stephen Fischmann has pre-filed two transparency bills:

  • SB 52, Electronic Copies of Public Records
  • SB 49, Public Access to PRC Rulemaking & Case Info

The first would address a constant thorn in the side of news reporters and other watchdogs – the rampant ‘confusion’ that exists over how to deal with electronic records. Do you still charge 50 cents per page to email an 80-page PDF? Technically, the law is silent. This bill would change that and implement a common-sense solution.

The second would provide better public access to rate-case information, by mandating online posting.

Bravo!

The design and content-management system for the new FOG website (launch date 7/20/11) is supported by funding from the National Freedom of Information Coalition, through a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
Established in 1950, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation makes national grants in journalism, education and arts and culture. Its fourth program, community initiatives, is concentrated in 26 communities where the Knight brothers published newspapers, but the foundation is wholly separate from and independent of those newspapers.
